This manuscript in the Bibliothèque Municipal, Alençon (Dept. Orne, France) is a missal which was used in the abbey Notre Dame de Silly. It is dated ca. 1471 [1].


Folio 007r is decorated with a border, on which in the lower part a snail may be seen. The shell is brown and dextral, stylised; the animal whitish-grey. In the context, however, one sees that two hybrid knights with shields and long lances are fighting each other. The poor snail is in the middle… Another variation on the ‘knight v. snail’ theme, so far not seen listed anywhere.
