In the Bibliothèque Municipal in Orléans, an old French Bible is being kept which has illuminations mainly in the decorated initials. This bible is written in Latin and has been dated from the early 13th century [1].

On folio 311v we find a decorated initial ‘C’ with a snail inside. The snail is seen in typically medieval ‘2D squashed mode’, with a dextral, stylised shell suggesting some ribs or growth striae, and the humanised head of the snail peeking out of the aperture.
