Juigalpa is a city in central Nicaragua. The name Juigalpa means “land abundant of jicaro [Crescentia alata, a species in the trumpet-flower family Bignoniaceae]” and “breeding of black snails” in the Indian language Náhualt. [1] The seeds of the ‘jicaro’ tree are black, but which black snails might have been meant remains somewhat mysterious. Anyway, in the flag they are white: four identical, dextral snails. Since they are stylised this doesn’t give much of a clue about their origin, but I doubt if they are locals.
