This manuscript in the Departement de Musique, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris—known as the ‘Chansonnier Nivelle de la Chaussée’—has been extensively documented by Woetman Christoffersen as one of the ‘Loire Valley’ chansonniers .
On f. 9v the song “Pour le mal qu’en vous je parçoy” Starts with a decorated initial, in which faintly a sinistral snail may be seen.
A similar snail, with the tentacles clearly shown, may be found on f. 20r, as part of the song “Se ung peu d’esperance avoye”.
These decorated initials are hypothesised by Woetman Christoffersen to have been made in Paris or Tours and are dated in the 1460s.
