The etching of today was made by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677), who was born in Bohemia but made this work in Antwerp, Belgium ca. 1644–1652.
Besides the five butterflies and a caterpillar, a land snail is shown from its right-hand side, the dextral shell in top-view. It is a very realistically made snail, even the border of the foot is detailed in this etching. Knowing the place of origin, one is tempted to see a Cepaea species in it.
