Nomen est omen. Schneckenhausen [German for ‘snail houses’] is a small rural village in south-western Germany, near the city of Kaiserslautern. The coat of arms is described as: „Von Schwarz und Silber geteilt, oben fünf silberne Bollen 2:1:2, unten eine rote Schnecke mit Schneckenhaus“ [Shared black and silver top half with five silvers balls, below a red snail with shell; 1]


So, while the name is in plural, there is actually only one snail in the coat of arms. Schneckenhaus would thus have been more appropriate. The shell is sinistral, and rather turrited; the animal is naturalistically drawn and looks like a Helix species. But I guess the artist of the coat of arms has followed his imagination…
