In the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek Aesop’s Fables are present in the French translation of Julien Macho, as issued in Lyon in 1496 [1]. While text is similar across translations, the illustrations — though often quite similar as well — are made by different artists. In this copy they are of an anonymous artist.

On folio 27r an illustration is seen where a bird of prey carries a snail. Because the figure is a woodcut, the snail is stylised, but still it is clear it is a dextral specimen. Two tentacles and an eye-spot are visible at the animal’s head.
