The Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée, Marseille has the first object found which may be tagged as ‘photograph’. It is a postal card, from the beginning of the 20th century, displaying ‘Carnaval de Nice’ .
In the central part of the decor, a shell is used as a house, complete with smoking chimney. As the text says “Habitation à bon Marché au Pays du Soleil”, it must be kept in mind that during Canaveral in February the average hours of sunshine is 6, but the average temperature is only 11C in Nice. Time to heat up the snail (house)!
