In the collection of the Galleria Palatina, Florence a work by Filippo Napoletano (c. 1587–1629) – entitled ‘Venditore di lumache’ – found my attention. In this huge collection it is on display in the Sala dell’educazione di Giove [1, 2, 3].
On the plate in the foreground, circa 15 snails hare apparently been painted when alive; only the two largest tentacles are discernible. From the specimen at left-hand position it can be seen that dextral specimens were used. Not enough detail is possible, however, for a species identification.
