Nicolaes van Verendael worked in Antwerp, where he was born in 1640 and died 1691. He had a good reputation at a young age already, known to be a meticulous worker. This oil painting, entitled “Flowers in a glass vase, with a snail, on a stone ledge”, is in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and is dated 1673 [1, 2].
In the left lower corner, a snail is on the edge of the ledge. It is a dextral specimen of Cepaea nemoralis (L., 1758).
