Marie Charles Donzel was born in 1824, died in 1869 and is buried on the Père Lachaise Cementery in Paris [1]. Otherwise I couldn’t find biographical data. Of this relatively unknown painter, the Musée du Louvre has in its graphical arts collection the drawing entitled “Chevalier monté sur un escargot” [2]. Here you see a 19th century variation on the earlier medieval theme.

Chevalier monté sur un escargot

The snail is a bit stylised, hence unidentifiable, but seems to be a dextral specimen.
