RMA_SK-A-1463_

This oil paint of a still life with roses was made by Elias van den Broeck (active 1670–1708), and is now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam [1].

One snail is immediately visible.

There is a second one nearby however…

Both snails are yellow respectively pink morphs of a Cepaea species, dextral specimens and the animals are painted in typically ‘van den Broeck style’: elongated and elegant.
