Depicted here is a famous example of clemency and restraint from Classical antiquity. After conquering Carthage, the Roman general Scipio gave a beautiful young woman he had received as war booty back to her fiancé. He even returned the gifts her parents offered him. Van Mander favoured bold colours, which are here set off to good advantage against the landscape. This describes a painting made in 1600 by Karel van Mander (I), entitled “The Continence of Scipio”, now in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam [1].


In the foreground is a slug visible after some magnification. Judged by the colour pattern this is a Limax species.
